Human Rights Awards 2011

Nominations of people and organizations that make life better by promoting human rights in the province are being sought for the 2011 Human Rights Award.

The awards are presented by the Human Rights Commission and Partners for Human Rights.

"Improving and protecting human rights is a commitment that takes a lot of time and hard work," said acting Minister responsible for the Human Rights Commission Graham Steele. "The awards are a way of acknowledging people and organizations who are devoted to improving life for all of us and encourage others to get involved."

The awards will be presented at the International Human Rights Day celebration, Friday, Dec. 9. The theme this year is Celebrating 25 Years of Partners for Human Rights: Raising Awareness Through Education in Our Communities.

"This is a special year because we are celebrating 25 years of Partners for Human Rights and the group's success in raising awareness through education," said Karen Fitzner, acting director and CEO of the Human Rights Commission. "At the same time, we look forward to honouring those who share this goal."

Award winners in 2010 were 14-year-old Kendra Slawter of East Preston and Anne Simmons of North Preston.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, Oct. 14. For more information and nomination forms go to http://humanrights.gov.ns.ca/node/74
