Crown Attorney Appointed in Sydney

Glenn Gouthro has been appointed a Crown attorney in the Sydney office of the Public Prosecution Service.

The appointment was announced today, August 2, by Martin Herschorn, director of Public Prosecutions.

"I am very pleased Mr. Gouthro has joined our team," said Mr. Herschorn. "His extensive experience in criminal law will be an asset to the Public Prosecution Service."

A native of Whitney Pier, Cape Breton, Mr. Gouthro graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with an honours bachelor of science in geology in 1984 and from the University of New Brunswick law school in 1988. He articled with the Sydney law firm of Boudreau Beaton and LaFosse and in 1989 was appointed an associate with the firm.

In 1990 he joined the Sydney office of Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales and became a partner in 1997. In 2002 Mr Gouthro became a partner with the Sydney law firm of Murray Gouthro Wall. He concentrated on litigation and criminal defence work throughout his time in private practice but also conducted prosecutions of offences under federal legislation as an agent of the federal Crown attorney.

Mr. Gouthro has been active in the Cape Breton Barristers' Society and was a member of the executive until he was appointed president for 2008. He is also a former member of the Supreme Court Liaison Committee. He has coached female hockey and is a former vice-president of the Cape Breton Speed Skating Club and a former executive member of Speed Skate Nova Scotia. Currently, he is a member of the executive of the Cape Breton Health and Recreation Complex.
