Province Celebrates Pride Week
The contributions of the province's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community were celebrated today, July 18, at Province House.
Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister David Wilson and Commissioner of the Public Service Commission, Kelliann Dean joined members of the provincial Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI) Network and their supporters for a flag-raising ceremony to mark Provincial Pride in Nova Scotia.
"Raising the Pride flag today at the legislature symbolizes that the government supports, recognizes, celebrates and promotes diversity in all our communities," said Mr. Wilson. "Our diverse culture and heritage makes Nova Scotia a better place to live and raise a family and enhances the quality of life in our communities."
The LGBTI network was formed in 2009 for public servants who identify with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities.
Kevin Barrett is one of the core members of the network and he says he is pleased to be part of today's ceremony.
"LGBTI's role in government is to create and maintain a supportive workplace for LGBTI employees and their allies," said Mr. Barrett. "We are building a strong vibrant presence in government with the help of departments like the Public Service Commission and Communities, Culture and Heritage on diversity and inclusion."
The network meets regularly to discuss opportunities to create a more inclusive work environment.
"As a responsible employer the province strives to ensure policies and programs acknowledge and serve the needs of all Nova Scotians and seeks to provide employees with a safe and respectful workplace," said Mr. Wilson.
With more than 35 public servants as members, the network is growing and gaining support.
The event brought together people from all levels of the public service and community organizations.
