Minister Congratulates Yarmouth on Successful Bid for 2012 World Junior A Hockey Challenge

Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Percy Paris congratulated Yarmouth today, June 6, on its successful bid to host the 2012 World Junior A Hockey Challenge in November 2012.

"This is an exciting opportunity for Yarmouth and our province and we congratulate those involved in this bid on their efforts," said Mr. Paris. "We are ready to support Yarmouth to ensure this event is the experience of a lifetime for athletes, businesses, and the sport and cultural communities in Yarmouth and surrounding areas."

This event will build on Yarmouth's growing reputation as an outstanding major events host, deliver international exposure for the province, and bring economic benefits.

Supported by Events Nova Scotia, the bid was prepared in collaboration with the Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners, Town of Yarmouth, Municipality of Yarmouth, Municipality of Argyle, Yarmouth Minor Hockey Association, Maritime Hockey League and Hockey Nova Scotia.

The World Junior A Hockey Challenge is a seven day event with competing teams from Russia, Sweden, United States, Switzerland, Canada East and Canada West.

The 2010 World Junior A Hockey Challenge was held in Penticton, B.C. and generated about $2.3 million in economic impact.
