Fish for Free June 4-5
NOTE: A list of fishing derbies taking place on sportfishing weekend follows this release.
Nova Scotia Sportfishing Weekend, June 4-5, offers families a chance to take part in one of the province's most popular pastimes for free.
This year, non-residents can also fish without a general fishing licence on this weekend.
"Sportfishing Weekend is a great opportunity for families to be together and enjoy the outdoors," said Sterling Belliveau, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "I encourage beginners, fishing enthusiasts and especially young anglers to come out June 4-5 to discover or rediscover the joys of angling."
The sportfishing weekend is organized by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and supported by more than 20 community organizations, with fishing derbies throughout the province offering fun and prizes.
Sportfishing is one of the most popular active outdoor sports in Nova Scotia, with an estimated 100,000 people participating each year. Sportfishing is worth about $92 million to the province's economy annually.
Anglers are reminded to use caution when fishing and although a licence is not required, all bag limits and other regulations still apply.
