Waverley Memorial Elementary School Officially Opens
Students from Waverley and surrounding communities came together to celebrate their new, state-of-the-art elementary school today, May 17.
Education Minister Ramona Jennex, students and school staff were joined by representatives from the Halifax Regional School Board and Halifax Regional Municipality for the official opening of Waverley Memorial Elementary School.
"Students and learning come first in Nova Scotia," said Ms. Jennex. "Waverley Memorial Elementary School is built to provide an environment that will optimize student learning and help students and staff be more engaged."
Along with classrooms, gymnasium and cafeteria, the school has a music room, art room, seminar room, literacy centre, language room and shared workrooms for students to work in small groups.
"Our students, staff, and parent community have truly embraced this wonderful opportunity of moving to a new school and we have developed a vibrant, cohesive school that is focused on improving student achievement and enriching student experiences," said Ken Marchand, principal of Waverley Memorial Elementary School. "As principal, I am privileged to be a part of it."
The school has been operating since September and has 370 students in grades primary to 6.
"I want to extend my sincere thanks to the province for building this school," said Donna Hubbard, Halifax Regional School Board member for District 8. "A need for a new school was recognized long ago and we are especially grateful to see that need satisfied."
