Premier Unveils Naval Bell in Province House

Premier Darrell Dexter and Commodore Laurence Hickey, commander of the Navy's Canadian Fleet Atlantic, unveiled an engraved bell commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Canadian naval service at Province House, today, May 4.

"Last year, I was pleased to present the Navy with a commemorative bell on behalf of Nova Scotians to recognize the commitment and dedication of 100 years of service and excellence," said Premier Dexter. "As the Navy begins its second century of service, I am proud to unveil this second bell in Province House as a way to mark the sacrifice of the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Canadian Navy."

The naval bell was cast by Lunenburg Foundry and the bell rope was made by Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Meredith. The bell is identical to the one presented to the Canadian Navy, which is on display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

"Canada's Navy has always enjoyed a special relationship with the maritime province of Nova Scotia over the past 100 years," said Commodore Hickey. "Today's event is a fine example of this relationship; we are grateful to be acknowledged in this manner of having a symbol of our naval heritage becoming a part of this beautiful building, Province House.

"The Navy looks forward to continuing this relationship with Nova Scotia and Nova Scotians as it enters its second century of service to Canada."
