New Glasgow Courts Relocate

Justice

Supreme, family, provincial and small claims court services will soon be available under one roof in Pictou County.

Following a $2 million renovation at the Pictou Justice Centre, New Glasgow court hearings and front counter service will relocate to Pictou May 2. The move will also address air-quality issues raised by New Glasgow court staff.

"This move is allowing us to manage staff health concerns and offer more centralized services," said Justice Minister Ross Landry. "We recognize this move may cause some challenges and difficulties for both staff and police. However, the health and safety of our staff is a priority."

The relocation of services will affect about 12 court employees and one provincial court judge.

Justice staff from maintenance enforcement, corrections and victim services located in other areas of the New Glasgow building will remain in that office.

"We made every effort to address this situation and there was no viable space available in New Glasgow. We are in a time of fiscal restraint, however our long-term goal remains to develop a justice centre to serve the New Glasgow, Trenton, Stellarton and Westville areas," said Mr. Landry.

Both levels of the Pictou Justice Centre were renovated to include a new courtroom, a judge's office, conference rooms and improved front counter space.

The New Glasgow facility will continue to serve as an overflow court and a prisoner exchange site when required.
