Art, Photo Contest Winners Featured in Anglers' Guide

Several budding photographers and school-aged artists have netted a spot in the pages of the 2011 Anglers' Handbook after winning two contests sponsored by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau announced the winners today, April 6, and said the contests were great ways to generate interest in sportfishing.

"I'm pleased many Nova Scotians took part in these contests and that they wanted to use their artistic talents to share experiences of a favourite pastime," said Mr. Belliveau. "Sportfishing is a popular recreational activity and more and more people are getting involved every year."

More than 100 children entered drawings, sketches and paintings of Nova Scotia's provincial fish, the native speckled or brook trout, in the first annual Kids' Fish Art Contest. Four winners were selected and each received a fishing rod, tackle box and trophy.

The winners were:

  • Brant Timmons, Port Hawkesbury, Primary to Grade 3 category
  • Kylee Hick, Hubbards, Grade 4 to 6 category
  • Fern Donovan, Leitches Creek, Cape Breton Co., Grade 7 to 9 category
  • Thomas Tooke, Musquodoboit, Grade 10 to 12 category

About 125 photos were entered to win the 2010 Fishin' Nova Scotia photo contest. Anglers were invited to submit their best photos from sportfishing experiences in six categories: species, young anglers, general, family and scenic.

The winners were:

  • Stephen MacDonald, Dartmouth, best of show category
  • Gregory Stevens, Chester, Lunenburg Co., general category
  • Carter Chaisson, Sydney, species category
  • Sean Dewitt, Dartmouth, young angler category (tie)
  • David Hutt, Truro, young angler category (tie)
  • Kevin MacEachern, Scotchtown, Cape Breton, scenic category
  • Dean MacEachern, Millville, Cape Breton, family category

Mr. MacDonald received a general fishing licence for life as the grand prize. He will now be able to enjoy the recreational and health benefits of sportfishing all across Nova Scotia with a free fishing licence each year for the rest of his life.

Both contests are being held again this year. The Kids' Fish Art Contest will run until Dec. 16. The Fishin' Nova Scotia photo contest closes Dec. 31. More details and contest rules are posted on the department website.
