Premier Congratulates Team Nova Scotia on Great Performance

Premier Darrell Dexter congratulated members of Team Nova Scotia today, Feb. 27, on a fantastic performance at the Halifax 2011 Canada Games, that included Nova Scotia being awarded the Centennial Cup and the Jack Pelech Award.

"I am so proud of our young athletes, not just for their performance during competition but for the classy and respectable way in which they represented their province throughout the Games," said Premier Dexter. "These young Nova Scotians were the perfect hosts, and you could tell that they had fun doing it."

The Centennial Cup is awarded to the provincial or territorial team that improves the most since its last appearance at a Canada Winter Games.

Nova Scotia had its best showing at a winter Games since the format of the competition was changed in 2000.

Nova Scotia won 12 medals -- five gold, six silver and one bronze. Many of the athletes also achieved personal best scores and finishes.

The Jack Pelech Award is given to the province or territory that best combines competitive performance, good sportsmanship and a spirit of fair play, co-operation and friendship.

The award is determined by ballots received from the Chef de Mission from each province and territory.

Both awards were given out at the Closing Ceremony of the Canada Games at the Halifax Metro Centre.
