Premier Congratulates Nova Scotia Athlete on Strong Performance

CORRECTION: To the release that was sent today, Feb. 22, at about 12:10 p.m., to clarify placement of Team Nova Scotia athlete.

Premier Darrell Dexter today, Feb. 22, congratulated Team Nova Scotia ice dancer Kailey Stewart for performing a personal best routine at the Halifax 2011 Canada Games.

"Our Team Nova Scotia athletes are getting stronger as the Games continue, and Kailey's performance on the ice Monday night is evidence of that," said Premier Dexter. "This young woman should be thrilled with setting a personal best in this difficult event. She has made Nova Scotians proud."

Kailey competed in the Special Olympics women's solo dance competition at the Canada Games.

The 17-year-old athlete from Harrietsfield is Nova Scotia's first entry in ice dance at the Games, and one of only two level 2 solo dancers nationally.

Canada Games rules state that because there were only two competitors in the event, a medal is presented to only the athlete that finished in first place.
