Province Works with School Board to Save Holy Angels High School

The committee established to find solutions to save Holy Angels High School delivered its recommendation to the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board today, Feb. 15.

Deputy minister of Education Rosalind Penfound met with school board officials to review the work conducted during the past three months. After reviewing the options, the department and the board agreed to pursue a lease with a potential new owner.

"Students, parents, and the school community value what Holy Angels has to offer young women," said Ramona Jennex, Minister of Education. "The Department of Education is happy to work with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board to help negotiate a lease so that students can remain at Holy Angels."

The joint committee of senior staff from the Department of Education and the board, formed in November, has been exploring options to save the only all-girls school in Atlantic Canada.

"I am pleased with the work we have done and I am optimistic that we can together find a way to see Holy Angels continue," said Lorne Green, Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board chair.

A potential buyer, who is interested in purchasing the building from the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame, has been in contact with the department and the school board to discuss the possibility of leasing the school.
