Tax Credit Ensures a Bright Future for Film Industry

NOTE: The following is an op-ed piece by Film Nova Scotia president and CEO Ann MacKenzie.

Our province is one of the most attractive film, television and new media jurisdictions in the country, thanks to the enhancements of the film industry and digital media tax credits, which were announced Dec. 6.

The support and incentives offered by the government are essential to maintaining this vibrant and creative industry. Tax credits help make the industry and various regions in Nova Scotia more competitive.

The film industry in Nova Scotia is a real success story. For over 25 years, it has brought international attention and acclaim to our province and allowed us to showcase our talent and beauty around the globe through both local and guest production.

The film industry is a cornerstone of the creative economy. Hiring local writers, directors, actors, musicians, visual artists, animators, graphic designers, costume designers and more. The industry is also environmentally friendly leaving a smaller carbon footprint than many other traditional industries.

Each year, the industry employs about 3,000 people and contributes over $100 million to our economy. Nova Scotia is continually ranked among the largest production centres in Canada.

Nova Scotia is home to several educational institutions and training programs that offer programs supporting this industry. Maintaining a strong film industry allows us to keep the graduates of these programs here by providing them with highly skilled and high paying jobs.

The Nova Scotia film industry tax credit is a great investment that offers a big return for the province. This labour-based credit creates good jobs and stimulates the economy. On domestic production, for every dollar received from the credit, an additional four dollars is attracted to our region. On foreign productions, every dollar leverages an additional nine.

The film industry can help in the quest to bring the province back to balance. It employs Nova Scotians, attracts investment from outside and maximizes the province's investment into our educational institutions by hiring many of their graduates.

The government's continued support for film industry and digital media tax credits will ensure the film industry and all the benefits it provides will continue to thrive in our province. These programs will create 21st century jobs that will grow the economy.
