Gosse Premier's Nominee for Speaker
Premier Darrell Dexter will nominate Gordie Gosse as the Speaker of the House of Assembly.
Members of the Legislative Assembly will vote on the nomination during a special sitting to be held soon.
"I look forward to putting Gordie's name forward as the next Speaker of the House of Assembly," said Premier Dexter. "He will be a great fit for the position, is very knowledgeable in legislative matters and will work hard to ensure an efficient operation in the House of Assembly."
Mr. Gosse is a life-long resident of Whitney Pier. He was first elected in 2003 and re-elected in 2006 and 2009. He is a third-generation steel worker who worked in the industry for 18 years and is a former executive director of the Whitney Pier Youth Club. Mr. Gosse lives in Whitney Pier with his wife Susan and their son Daniel. His adult son Gordie lives in Halifax.
The Speaker of the House presides over the Legislative Assembly, maintaining order, and regulating debate in accordance with House rules and practices. The Speaker decides questions of order, rules on questions, ensures that all viewpoints are heard, protects the rights of all members and casts the deciding vote in the event of a tie.
