Weather Impact Update, Dec. 14, 8:30 A.M.
The following is an update from the Joint Emergency Operations Centre as of 8:30 a.m., today, Dec. 14.
- The JEOC is operational and assessing the provincial impact of the storm. The Emergency Management Office is in storm preparation and response mode and has been tracking the storm for more than a week with Environment Canada. EMO is working closely with municipal officials and critical service providers including Nova Scotia Power.
- Wind and rainfall warnings remain in effect; check local weather and use caution on the roads. Stay away from the coast or coastal vantage points, conditions are dangerous.
- There are about 75,000 power outages across the province, down from a high of 93,000 overnight.
- Kingsway Gardens, an assisted living facility in Windsor, had a roof collapse overnight. Of the 13 residents evacuated, four are staying with family and friends and seven are at a Red Cross comfort centre at the War Memorial Community Centre in Windsor. There were no reported injuries. EMO was onsite co-ordinating with local emergency managers overnight. Further assessments are being conducted in daylight.
- Two comfort centres have been set up at the Berwick town and fire halls for residents without power. The Red Cross is also helping a few isolated residents.
- Some road closures are being reported, particularly in Kings County. Check local road conditions.
- The MacKay and MacDonald bridges in Halifax are reopened to high-sided and pedestrian traffic
- Flights are cancelled or delayed at the Halifax airport. Check flights before going to the airport
