Amendments Introduced to Weed Control Act

The province is weeding out problems on agricultural lands.

Agriculture Minister John MacDonell introduced amendments to the Weed Control Act today, Nov. 24, to clarify and modernize the law.

The proposed changes will allow more and better options for investigation and response to destroy weeds on agricultural lands. The act will be renamed the Agricultural Weed Control Act and reflect current Department of Agriculture resources and structure.

"Any threat to our farmlands must be dealt with quickly and effectively," said Mr. MacDonell. "These amendments will allow us to do exactly that by ensuring lands are better protected with improved measures for weed control."

The Weed Control Act was first introduced in 1967 to preserve the quality of agricultural lands and provide protection from agricultural weeds. The act allows for management of agricultural weeds that may be highly destructive, invasive, competitive and difficult to control.
