Update on Rainfall in Southwestern Nova Scotia

Local states of emergency have been extended to parts of Barrington, Yarmouth and Argyle because of flooding and storm damage that resulted from more than 200 millimetres of rainfall during the last few days.

The Emergency Management Office reports damage to bridges and road closures in those areas, prompting evacuations.

"Officials continue to be on top of the situation and are doing everything they can to help ensure the safety of residents," said Ramona Jennex, Minister for Emergency Management. "I know residents would join me in expressing my thanks and appreciation for their tireless hard work and effort."

The Red Cross has set up comfort centres at Club des Audacieux, Quinan, in the Municipality District of Argyle, and at Lake Vaughn Fire Department in Tusket, Yarmouth Co. As many as 120 families have been evacuated from their homes because of flooding and local officials are prepared to evacuate more people as required.

Nova Scotia Power, Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal and local emergency management officials are continuing to closely monitor the Lake Vaughn Dam, Carleton Dam and Gardner Mills Dam as water levels continue to rise.

Environment Canada's latest weather forecast indicates that the rain has, or is near, ending in areas of concern in the province.

The Emergency Management Office is working closely with municipalities to ensure that any needed provincial support is provided quickly and effectively.
