Take Extreme Caution Near Shore

As the search for a missing man who was swept from the rocks at Peggy's Cove continues, the Emergency Management Office is strongly advising all Nova Scotians to take extreme caution near the shore.

The RCMP, with support from the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre and ground search and rescue, began the search the evening of Nov. 5 when reports that a 28-year-old man was swept out to sea were received. An RCMP member taking part in the search was rescued by another officer and a firefighter after being swept into the water.

"The safety of Nova Scotians is our primary concern. We continue to hope for a positive outcome to this regrettable incident," said Frank Corbett, acting Minister of Emergency Management. "I can't emphasize enough how dangerous the shore and fast moving water can be during storm events. I urge all Nova Scotians to use extreme caution and not take any chances."

Tide levels have been high. As the rain continues to fall, water levels in rivers, streams, lakes are continuing to rise. Rivers and streams feeding into the ocean are running fast and could be carrying dangerous debris. Rocks and others areas near the shore are also slick from the rain, increasing the risk of falls.
