Boat Builders Stay Competitive with Marketing Funding

Nova Scotia's boat builders got a financial boost to support competitiveness in the global market and export sales beyond Atlantic Canada.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau announced $371,289.36 in funding today, Nov. 5, to help 21 Nova Scotia boat building companies and industry associations to be more successful by improving marketing and promotion efforts.

"This funding has helped boat builders take advantage of market opportunities around the world. More good jobs will be created and the economy will grow in our coastal communities," said Mr. Belliveau. "Helping our boat builders spread the word to new markets and countries ensures the sector's growth and long-term viability."

The investment is part of the $34.9-million Community Development Trust Fund started by the federal government to help communities, industry and workers hard hit by economic challenges. The funding was given through the Boat Builders' Marketing Assistance Program.

"Marketing to potential boat buyers is more important now than ever in these economic times. The Boat Builder Marketing Assistance Program is giving a much-needed leg-up to boatbuilders in Nova Scotia," said Tim Edwards, executive director of the Nova Scotia Boatbuilders Association. "New export sales bring new money into the province and means boatbuilders can keep their skilled workforce employed or hire additional people."

Boat building companies that received funding are export-ready and have export marketing experience, or are recognized boat building industry associations.
