Kings Mutual Century Centre Opens

A $13 million multi-use recreational facility is now in play for Berwick residents with the official opening of the Kings Mutual Century Centre.

Health Promotion and Protection Minister Maureen MacDonald, joined MP Greg Kerr, on behalf of Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Fred Whalen, Warden of Kings County, and Berwick Mayor John Prall at a ceremony today, Oct. 17 at the new centre.

"This investment will make life better for families in this region and help to improve the health of all who use it," said Ms. MacDonald. "The province is proud to support this important facility that will benefit the people of Berwick and the entire Annapolis Valley."

"I'm pleased that the government of Canada is investing in job-creating initiatives to stimulate local economies," said Mr. Kerr. "The construction of the Apple Dome not only created shovel-ready jobs, but will bring the community together in a state-of-the-art complex, creating memories that will be valued for many years to come."

The Kings Mutual Century Centre features a 900-seat arena with an NHL-size ice surface, 200-metre walking track, banquet room and space for the Berwick and District Lions Club.

"The Kings Mutual Century Centre is a wonderful community facility that the people of Berwick and district can be proud of," said George Moody, chairman of the planning committee. "With the help of all three levels of government, as well as private-sector support, we have been able to build something that will benefit this community for generations to come."

The province and the federal government have both committed $4 million to the centre. Other funding includes $500,000 from the town of Berwick, $450,000 from the County of Kings and a $1 million donation from The Kings Mutual Insurance Company.
