Fish Farms Open to Public

Nova Scotians will get a first-hand look at the aquaculture industry when three fish farms open for public tours between Oct. 16 and Oct. 24.

"Aquaculture is a dynamic and exciting industry that contributes more than $58 million to the Nova Scotia economy each year," said Sterling Belliveau, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to visit a fish farm and learn about aquaculture from local experts."

Ocean Trout Farms is a sea-based rainbow trout farm in Upper Point Latour, Shelburne Co. It opens to the public on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Scotian Halibut is a halibut hatchery and broodstock facility in Clark's Harbour, Shelburne Co. Public visits are available on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Innovative Fishery Products farms soft-shelled and hard-shelled clams in Belliveau Cove, Digby Co. It will be opened to the public on Sunday, Oct. 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The open houses are led and organized by the Aquaculture Association of Nova Scotia.

"Nova Scotians who tour a fish farm will see an environmentally and economically sustainable industry that provides jobs for Nova Scotians and helps meet the demand for superior quality and healthy food," said Bruce Hancock, executive director of the Aquaculture Association of Nova Scotia.

Raising shellfish, fin fish and aquatic plants employs about 750 people province-wide.

"Aquaculture is a sustainable industry and has great potential for future growth and employment," said Mr. Belliveau.

Directions to Fish farms:

  • Ocean Trout Farms

  • Take Highway 335 south from Highway 3, turn right on Abbotts Harbour Road and travel to Abbotts Harbour wharf.

  • Scotian Halibut

  • Take Highway 330 south from Highway 3, turn left at Trunk W, travel 13 kilometres and turn right on Kenny Street. The farm is located at 25 Kenney St.

  • Innovative Fishery Products

  • From Highway 101 take exit 28 onto Highway 1 heading west, travel for about 3.5 kilometres. The farm is located at 3569 Highway 1.
