Funding Supports Community Projects

NOTE: A list of projects receiving funding follows this release.

Nova Scotia's ability to compete as a tourism destination is getting a boost with more than $300,000 in investments in 15 projects across the province.

Tourism, Culture and Heritage Minister Percy Paris announced the funding today, Oct. 6, through the Tourism Development Investment Program, which provides funding to eligible non-profit organizations for projects that create innovative products or experiences for visitors.

"This enhances the opportunity visitors have to appreciate our rich cultures, incredible outdoor experiences and warm, friendly people," said Mr. Paris. "Investment in our tourism destinations will ensure that the province remains competitive, helping to create good jobs and grow the economy."

The Louisbourg Economic Development Society received two investments totalling $19,000 help complete the Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail and develop a consistent sign and interpretive plan for the town.

"The Town of Louisbourg has been experiencing an exciting revitalization this past year," said Lloydette MacDonald, manager of the society. "With the completion of our beautiful coastal trail and the addition of welcoming signs, we are confident that Louisbourg will be well-positioned to receive visitors from around the world and provide an experience they will not forget."

The Municipality of the County of Colchester received $40,000 to help develop the Five Islands Lighthouse Park Project.

"We welcome people from all over the world at Five Islands Lighthouse Park," said Hilary Paquet, parks and trails co-ordinator for the Municipality of Colchester. "New walking paths, a look-off and other improvements will enhance their experience, allowing them to be close to the water and take in our incredible views."

Other projects receiving funding include the Thinkers' Lodge Master Interpretive Plan in Pugwash and the Wharf of Yesteryear in West Pubnico.
