Public Lecture Series at Government House

Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis announced today, Sept. 17, the start of a public lecture series to be hosted in Government House covering topics of local, national and international importance.

The lecture series will be held monthly, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 21.

"This public lecture series will not only encourage dialogue on current affairs and issues, but also reinforce Halifax as a centre of thought and knowledge," said Lt.-Gov. Francis.

"Given the numerous institutions of higher learning, there are many interesting and informative speakers I would like to host in the newly renovated Government House."

The lieutenant-governor has been a strong advocate of life-long learning.

The inaugural lecture by author Christopher McCreery, one of Canada's foremost experts on national honours, and private secretary to the lieutenant-governor, will give a two-century overview on the history of one of North America's oldest vice-regal residences.

"The restoration of Government House preserves a tangible national treasure," said Mr. McCreery. "The concept of responsible government started in Government House. The recent rededication by the Queen and her stay in the residence in June was proof of the significance of the home and the esteem with which the vice-regal residence is held by the Royal Family."

The 90-minute lectures begin at 7 p.m., and include a discussion period. Seating is limited and registration is required.
