Justice Minister makes Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act Presentation

Justice Minister Ross Landry recognized Killam Properties Inc.'s contribution to building safer communities with a plaque presentation today, Sept. 9th.

Killam Properties has actively supported the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act (SCAN) since it's inception in 2007. The act improves community safety by encouraging citizens to report suspected illegal activity including drugs, alcohol, gaming or prostitution in their communities or neighbourhoods.

"The government is committed to making life better for families in our province. Creating safe and secure communities is part of that equation," said Mr. Landry. "I applaud Killam Properties' efforts in helping create safer housing communities and reduce the opportunities for crime."

Following today's presentation, copies of the plaque will hang in all Killam Properties' offices throughout the province and a Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act sticker will be posted in each lobby.

"Killam Properties is proud to support the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, and we are pleased to help the communities we serve," said Killam Properties president and CEO, Philip Fraser. "We are dedicated to providing safe and secure housing for our tenants and we want to send a message that illegal activity is not welcomed at our properties."

If certain activities pose a serious and immediate threat to public safety, the act allows for appropriate action to be taken. Department of Justice Public Safety investigators have the authority to move quickly if illegal activity is suspected, and issue warning letters or notices to vacate.

Anyone wishing to make a complaint under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act can contact investigators at 1-877-357-2337.

Killam Properties Inc., based in Halifax, is one of Canada's largest residential landlords, owning and operating multi-family apartments and manufactured home communities.
