Economy Tops Discussions for Premiers in Winnipeg

It was apparent in discussions among the premiers in Winnipeg today, Aug. 5, that economic recovery remains a priority for all Canadian jurisdictions, including Nova Scotia.

The premiers agreed that it is important to continue investing in infrastructure, particularly health-care facilities. They also agreed that provinces and territories will need to collaborate with the federal government and the private sector to ensure the fragility of the American and European markets doesn't negatively impact Canada's economy.

"While Canada has recovered from the recession better than some countries, I agree with my fellow premiers that it's still best to take a cautious and prudent approach," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "Nova Scotia has had great success creating good jobs and growing the economy, and by working together we can see similar success right across the country."

Canada's 13 premiers are meeting in Winnipeg today and Friday at the annual summer meeting of the Council of the Federation.

On Dec. 5, 2003, Canada's premiers announced the creation of the Council of the Federation, an institution for a new era in collaborative intergovernmental relations. The council was created because the premiers believe it is important for provinces and territories to play a leadership role in revitalizing the Canadian federation and building a more constructive and co-operative federal system.
