Premier to Discuss Sustainable Health Care, Canada-U.S. Relations in Winnipeg

Premier Darrell Dexter will join premiers and delegates from Canada's other provinces and territories for the 2010 Council of the Federation summer meeting in Winnipeg, Aug. 5-6.

On Thursday, talks will centre on sustainable economic recovery, water supply management and health care. The premiers will discuss progress in economic renewal and obstacles to achieving full recovery, as well as ensuring affordable health care while maintaining quality standards of care.

"These meetings are an ideal opportunity for the premiers to discuss the issues facing their individual provinces and Canada as a whole, thus strengthening our regional relationships," said Premier Dexter. "It is also a chance to develop a plan that will help ensure better health care, create good jobs and grow the economy in all regions of the country."

On Friday, the discussions will turn to international and domestic climate change issues and Canada-United States relations, including their energy relationship and opportunities for integration.

Premier Dexter will help lead discussions on sustainable health care and Canada-U.S. relations.

The premiers will also examine talks on Canada–European Union (CETA) trade negotiations, as well as the nomination of the Bay of Fundy to represent Canada in the global 7 Wonders of Nature contest.

Earlier today, the premiers met with the leaders of national aboriginal organizations in Churchill, Man.
