Highland Village July Events, Programs

Once again the Highland Village Museum in Iona, Victoria County, is full of fun and exciting activities for both young and old this July.

The outdoor living history museum, with a breathtaking view of the Bras d'Or Lakes, offers visitors the chance to explore period buildings and walk among Gaels.

Events and programs in July include:

  • July 1. Canada Day Open House to celebrate the founding of our country. Admission is free.

  • July 2. David Francey will perform in concert with Craig Werth in the Malagawatch Church. Francey received three JUNO awards and the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award. Admission is $20 with general seating. Prepaid reservations are required. The concert begins at 7 p.m.

  • July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30. Every morning from 10 a.m to noon is spòrs or fun. Games will be played that focus on language, song, dance, and other aspects of Gaelic life. Children can learn Gaelic vocabulary and phrases through interactive games. Spòrs is for children 5-10 years old.

  • July 7, 14, 21, 28. Làithean Sona or Happy Days. Children are invited to take part in a special living history program focusing on language, song, dance, and other aspects of Scottish heritage. The program features special hands-on activities including chores, crafts, language, and song. Costumes are provided. This program occurs every Wednesday for the month of July. Làithean Sona runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $30 per child. Prepaid reservations are required.

  • July 8 and 22. Na Deugairean or The Teenagers. Young people are invited to participate in this special living history program to get a sense of the responsibilities and the lifestyles of young Gaels in days past. The program features special hands-on activities including chores, crafts, language, and song. Costumes are provided. Admission to this program is $30. Prepaid reservations are required. Na Deugairean is from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

  • July 15 and 29. Candlelight Tour is an intimate evening storytelling tour of the site under a Cape Breton sunset. The tour runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for students, and $28 per family. Prepaid reservations are required.

  • July 17. Codfish supper. Come satisfy your taste buds with a feed of salt cod, potatoes, and all the trimmings of a traditional codfish supper. Hot dogs are also available. The supper is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $8 for children, and hot dogs are $2. This will be the only codfish supper in July.

  • July 22. Celebrate the music of Washabuck fiddler Michael Anthony MacLean with a concert in the Malagawatch Church. Admission is $15 with general seating. Prepaid reservations are required. The concert begins at 7 p.m.

  • July 24. Margaret Bennett will present the 2010 Joe Neil MacNeil Memeorial Lecture. Following the lecture Ms. Bennett will hold a book signing for her new book, Dìleab Ailein: The legacy of Allan MacArthur- Newfoundland Traditions Across Four Generations. The lecture will begin at 2 p.m. followed by the book signing at 3 p.m. in the Tuning Room. Admission is free.

  • July 25. The River and Lakeside Pastoral Charge of the United Church of Canada hosts its annual anniversary church service in the Malagawatch Church. The service starts at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
