Premier Presents Gift to Commemorate Navy Centennial

Premier Darrell Dexter today, June 25, presented Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic Rear Admiral Paul Maddison with an engraved bell commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Canadian naval service.

"Nova Scotians, and all Canadians, owe a great deal to the men and women of our Canadian Armed Forces," said Premier Dexter. "On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I am proud to extend this symbol of our gratitude and recognition of the Canadian Navy Centennial.

"May this bell remind everyone of the commitment and sacrifice our sailors have made over the past century, and continue to make every day."

Premier Dexter made the presentation as part of the Department of Nation Defence Family Appreciation Day at the Halifax Dockyard.

The bell, presented to Rear Admiral Maddison, will be displayed at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, while a second identical bell will be displayed at Province House.

Rear Admiral Maddison said the selection of a bell as a commemorative gift is most appropriate for the navy.

"The bell is central to the ceremonies, traditions and routines of all navies and has been for the past several centuries," Rear Admiral Maddison said.

"By honouring us who serve today, Premier Dexter and all Nova Scotians are also commemorating the courage, camaraderie and sacrifice of those who chose to serve at sea in the past, as well as the long and distinguished relationship between the Navy and the people of Nova Scotia. Truth be told, I don't think there could be one without the other."

After the presentation, Premier Dexter and Rear Admiral Maddison officially opened the Navy Centennial Village, kicking off a week of events for the International Fleet Review.
