Access Awareness Week May 30-June 5

Valuing people and creating inclusive communities are the focus of this year's Access Awareness Week from May 30 to June 5.

The week, with the theme Valuing People Equals Inclusive Communities, is organized by the Nova Scotia Disabled Persons Commission and Partnership for Access Awareness Nova Scotia.

"This year's theme is a direct reflection of our belief that accessible communities contain more than ramps and elevators," said Denise Peterson-Rafuse, Minister responsible for the Disabled Persons Commission. "Truly accessible communities value people, recognize ability, and celebrate diversity. Supporting inclusive communities is the right decision for Nova Scotia families."

On Monday, May 31, a proclamation will be read by Ms. Peterson-Rafuse at Province House along with the presentation of the Mel Hebb Action Awards. The awards are for Nova Scotians who have made a meaningful contribution to the lives of persons with disabilities.

"Access Awareness Week promotes and celebrates inclusion and accessibility in all forms," said Anne MacRae, executive director of the Disabled Persons Commission. "The Mel Hebb award winners are excellent examples of people making a difference in their communities."

Other events include the Breakfast of Inclusion, which includes a series of speakers to address using sport and leisure activities as a way to build more inclusive communities.

The week will end with a scholarship luncheon on Friday, June 4, at the World Trade and Convention Center in Halifax. Eight students from across the province will be presented with scholarships to begin or complete their post-secondary education or training.
