Nova Scotia Salutes Navy's 100th Birthday
Deputy Premier Frank Corbett wished the Canadian Navy a happy 100th birthday today, May 4, and thanked its sailors for their service over the past century.
"The Navy was born in Halifax and grew up in Nova Scotia," said Mr. Corbett.
"Throughout the years, we have watched it develop into one of the most respected forces in the world. Nova Scotia is proud of our navy and our nation's sailors. Happy 100th birthday!"
The Royal Canadian Navy was established on May 4, 1910. Halifax became its East Coast headquarters and also home to its naval college. This was a natural fit as Nova Scotia's naval heritage stretches back to the 1700s.
The Navy began with two ships and its flagship, HMS Niobe, was based in Halifax. Today, CFB Halifax is the largest military base in Canada.
"The Navy, its sailors and their families have made, and continue to make, great contributions to our province," said Mr. Corbett. "We thank the sailors and the families for their contribution to Nova Scotia, and we honour those who have sacrificed for our country's security.
"Nova Scotia cherishes its connection to the Navy and looks forward to another 100 years of this great relationship."
Highlights of centennial celebrations in Nova Scotia include a visit by dozens of foreign and Canadian naval ships, a special navy theme to the Nova Scotia International Tattoo, an art exhibition at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and a naval history conference.
