Province, Partners Recognize Building Safety Week

Municipal officials are being recognized for their efforts to ensure buildings in the province meet the health and safety requirements of the Nova Scotia Building Code.

"Keeping our families, friends, and communities safe remains one of our top priorities," said Marilyn More, Minister of Labour and Workforce Development, in recognition of Building Safety Week, which runs Sunday, May 2 to Saturday, May 8. "All Nova Scotians deserve the peace of mind that the buildings where they work, live, and play are constructed properly.”

"Building inspectors need to be up to date on the latest trends and technologies in construction," said Bob Cormier, director of building, fire and technical safety. "We work very closely with our partners in all levels of government to ensure that inspectors have the latest training and tools."

In Nova Scotia, building inspectors ensure that all construction meets the Nova Scotia Building Code, which is based on the national standards. This includes design reviews and audit inspections.

The province, in partnership with the Alliance of Canadian Building Officials Association and the Nova Scotia Buildings Officials Association, help provide support for municipalities to purchase and develop training programs.

"Building Safety Week emphasizes the importance of professional building officials working in every community across Nova Scotia, ensuring that all buildings are constructed properly and safe to occupy," says Mannie Withrow, president of Alliance of Canadian Building Officials.

Building Safety Week is a national event and is recognized individually in each province.
