Province Invests $2 million to Increase Capacity of NSCC Programs
More Nova Scotia students will benefit from training thanks to a $2-million provincial investment in high-demand programs at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC).
The provincial budget included plans to create jobs and grow the economy in Nova Scotia. Premier Darrell Dexter and Education Minister Marilyn More announced some details today, April 13, which include an additional 250 seats in NSCC campuses across the province.
"I am pleased to be able to fulfill this commitment to students to add seats to NSCC that will help create secure jobs and grow the economy across the province," said Premier Dexter. "This investment will work to provide students with the training and support they need to build a life for themselves and their families right here at home."
The additional seats will help meet the demands of the province's labour market.
"Nova Scotia prides itself on being a learning province, and this will allow more students an opportunity to benefit from the world-class training Nova Scotia community college provides," said Ms. More. "These students will create a stronger, more competitive labour market in Nova Scotia."
Several new programs offered at NSCC campuses will include:
- Mental Health Recovery and Promotion at Burridge Campus, Yarmouth
- Behavioural Intervention, Strait Area Campus, Port Hawkesbury
- Industrial Engineering Technology, at the Centre for the Built Environment, Waterfront Campus, Dartmouth.
The funding will also expand capacity in in NSCC's schools of Access, Applied Arts and New Media, and Business.
"Demand for advanced skills training at NSCC continues to grow as more people recognize college education as the pathway to better career opportunities and an improved quality of life," said NSCC president, Joan McArthur-Blair. "This investment by the provincial government will help more Nova Scotians access these opportunities and will ensure employers can find the skilled people they need to power the economy."
