Premier Urges Tribute to First World War Veterans

Premier Darrell Dexter encourages Nova Scotians to honour all those who served in the First World War by signing a Book of Reflection at Province House.

"Many brave men and women put their lives on the line in service to Canada during the First World War," said Premier Dexter, who is also Minister of Military Relations. "The First World War took place almost a century ago, but the sacrifices that were made to keep our country free should always be fresh in our minds. I encourage everyone to sign the Book of Reflection."

More than 650,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders served from 1914-1918. Of those, more than 68,000 lost their lives and more than 170,000 were injured. John Babcock, Canada's last known First World War veteran, died in February. A series of End of an Era events, including the Book of Reflection, have been launched by the federal government to honour First World War veterans.

The Book of Reflection is available in the front foyer of Province House, 1726 Hollis St., Halifax, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each business day until April 22.

Nova Scotians who can't make it to Province House can sign a virtual Book of Reflection at www.vac-acc.gc.ca .

A ceremony to pay tribute to First World War veterans will be held Friday, April 9, at the cenotaph at Parade Square on Argyle Street in Halifax, beginning at 11 a.m.
