Province Provides Assistance to Western Nova Scotia

The provincial government is taking further steps to address the economic challenges faced by the Western region of the province.

The province is saving $600,000 by buying out its contract with Bay Ferries. The company was owed $3 million under the existing contract signed in January, 2009. The province agreed to an early payout of $2.4 million in order to save $600,000, which will be made available for forward looking investments in economic development in Western Nova Scotia.

"This is part of our ongoing efforts to build sustainable economic growth in the region," said Economic and Rural Development Minister Percy Paris. "It's important to the people of Yarmouth that we re-allocate the savings from this agreement to help spur tourism and economic development in this and neighbouring communities."

These funds will support the important work of Team West. Comprised of representatives from the provincial, municipal and federal governments, and the community, the team is focused on an analysis of the region and developing a comprehensive economic development strategy.

"With the resources in place to help this team do its work, we will see that the area's entrepreneurial spirit and success with partnerships come together to lead the way to renewed opportunity," said Mr. Paris. "Restored air service from Yarmouth to Portland is certainly welcome news for the community and we can build on the assets and strengths of the region."

The area involved in the strategy will extend from Liverpool, around the western end of the province to Annapolis Royal. Sectors such as agriculture, tourism, fisheries, forestry will be reviewed by the team as they relate to sustainable employment, improving economic infrastructure and opportunities to make the region more competitive on the international stage.
