Premier Looks for Outstanding Adult Learner

Premier Darrell Dexter called for nominations today, March 19, for this year's Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

The award celebrates learners who have made exceptional contributions in the field of literacy. The winner will be honoured at an event this fall.

"Every year, Nova Scotians are improving their skills by accessing the wide variety of literacy programs being offered across the province," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "The knowledge they gain through their hard work helps benefit not only themselves, but also their families, their communities, and indeed, the whole province."

Canada's premiers and territorial leaders created the Council of the Federation Literacy award in July 2004, which is given annually to a recipient in each province and territory. In Nova Scotia, the award recognizes an adult learner who has made significant contributions to their school, workplace and/or community through literacy upgrading.

"It took a lot of effort for me to take that first step through the door, but once I started, and the more I learned, the more I got into it, and I haven't stopped since," said Blaise Sullivan, last year's winner. "I was amazed at the resources that are available. It has been so beneficial to my life, beyond just the skills I've learned. I hope more people will take that first step and access some of these programs."

Mr. Sullivan is a successful entrepreneur in Antigonish, a busy husband and father of four children, and an outstanding adult learner.

Anyone can nominate an adult literacy learner for the award. Nomination forms are available at adult literacy organizations, including Literacy Nova Scotia, community-based literacy groups, Nova Scotia Community College, adult high schools and workplace education partners. The Department of Labour and Workforce Development works with literacy organizations to help adult Nova Scotians improve literacy and math skills through the Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning.

Nominations for the Premier's Council of the Federation Award close April 30. The winner will be notified in August.
