Premier Optimistic About Future Energy Co-operation
Premier Darrell Dexter says he is satisfied a revised agreement between New Brunswick Power and Hydro Quebec addresses concerns that the deal would have limited Nova Scotia's ability to connect with other jurisdictions and fully develop its renewable energy resources.
New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham announced today, Jan. 20, that under the revised agreement, New Brunswick Power will retain complete ownership and control of its transmission and distribution companies.
Premier Dexter said Nova Scotia has always been interested in working with New Brunswick on regional issues, including energy. He said he is optimistic that today's changes show New Brunswick is listening and that there is a basis to co-operate on future energy policy in Atlantic Canada.
"I still have to review the amended agreement in detail, but it appears that the changes announced today address the concerns that Nova Scotia had with the proposed sale of New Brunswick Power," Premier Dexter said. "Nova Scotia is not an energy island -- it needs strong connections with the rest of Canada, and North America.
"These changes will help ensure that Nova Scotia has access to an energy corridor through New Brunswick to the eastern United States, which will assist in the development of the province's renewable energy resources. The revised agreement will also help strengthen connections with Newfoundland and Labrador."
