Research Survey Underway to Improve Achievement, Narrow Gaps

Students and teachers in grades 3 to 12 are participating in a research survey aimed at helping educators better address the learning needs of all students.

The Department of Education, in partnership with Harvard University, is conducting the survey in 66 schools across six school boards, today, Nov. 25.

The goal of the survey is to examine the impact school and classroom climate, teaching approaches and student engagement have on the success of students, many of whom are from culturally and socially diverse backgrounds.

Students in the pilot study will be asked about personal experiences in school, family, racial identity, the language they speak at home and other areas touching on student engagement.

The questionnaire is voluntary and responses are confidential.

"Our goal is to better understand student perspectives on learning and identify ways to better help all students reach their full potential," said Education Minister Marilyn More.

The data will help ensure programs, services and resources are in place to narrow achievement gaps and raise levels for all students. The results, and recommendations, are expected later this school year.
