New Harbourwalk Section Officially Opens on Bedford Waterfront
The picturesque Bedford Basin will become even more accessible for walkers and runners alike with the official opening of a new section of the Bedford Harbourwalk on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m.
Colin MacLean, president and CEO of Waterfront Development Corporation, will be joined by MLA Mat Whynott, Halifax Regional Municipality Mayor Peter Kelly, Valerie Payn, president of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce and community representatives.
"This scenic addition enhances the opportunity for active, healthy living at the water's edge for residents and visitors," said Mr. MacLean. "The walkway will connect the existing Harbourwalk to future trails and will provide continued public waterfront access during future development."
Mr. MacLean noted community members are providing input on waterfront projects.
The new 800-metre paved walkway in Mill Cove is a natural, green corridor connecting the Harbourwalk, including DeWolf Park and the ampitheatre, to future developments in the area.
Mr. Whynott, speaking on behalf of Percy Paris, Minister of Economic and Rural Development, says the community welcomes the addition.
"This curved walkway, which will have benches to allow people to enjoy the beautiful view of the Bedford Basin, has turned a well-used temporary trail into a permanent addition," said Mr. Whynott. "It can be enjoyed by everyone in the community."
The park-like setting includes a curved, paved walkway and turns a well-used temporary trail into a permanent addition. Final touches will include benches allowing people to enjoy the views of the Bedford Basin.
An infill project in the Bedford Basin, to help future development, generated revenue that the Waterfront Development Corporation reinvested. The new trail is about $500,000.
"It is great to see the developments taking shape on the Bedford Harbourwalk," said Ms. Payn. "Active living is such an important part of life and I take full advantage of the trails and the beauty that Halifax has to offer. These developments and improvements will go a long way to getting our community more active, and I look forward to seeing what WDC has in story for the new year."
The opening is part of the Discover your Bedford Waterfront event, which takes place near the South Jetty at the end of Waterfront Drive.
The South Jetty and public boat launch were built in 2005 and a temporary trail was established. Nearby Convoy Quay has enhanced the attraction of the Bedford waterfront and, with its connection to DeWolf Park, enjoys daily use by local residents and is home to the annual Bedford Days celebration.
Public consultation are important for future waterfront development in the Mill Cove and Birch Cove areas. A public presentation on the final plans for future development is scheduled for the new year.
