Justice Minister Brings Concerns to New Brunswick Meeting

Justice Minister Ross Landry is in Fredericton today, Oct. 28, for the start of three days of meetings with his provincial and territorial counterparts, federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson and Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan.

"This is a great opportunity to collaborate on crime prevention and justice priorities," said Mr. Landry. "While I'm new to this annual forum I am not new to the issues related to First Nations policing in Canada and I will raise the need for adequate federal resources for the policing of Nova Scotia's Mi'kmaq communities."

During the meeting, Mr.Landry will also reiterate Nova Scotia's desire to have federal changes that would give the courts enough flexibility to detain a young person before trial when their behaviour endangers themselves or the public.

Nova Scotia has highlighted that recommendation since it was brought forward as part of the Nunn Commission of Inquiry into the death of Theresa McEvoy. That would require changes to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
