Jason Bernard Named Mi'kmaq Representative for Regional School Board

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

Jason Bernard was appointed Mi'kmaq representative for the Strait Regional School Board, Oct. 7.

Mr. Bernard of We'koqma'q First Nation was recommended for the position by the chiefs of the Chapel Island, Paq'tnkek and We'koqma'q communities and brings several years of experience to the role.

"Our government recognizes the important and unique perspective Mi'kmaq representation brings to our educational system," said Education Minister Marilyn More. "Mr. Bernard has the full support of the Mi’kmaq community and we look forward to welcoming him and his expertise to the Strait Regional School Board."

Mi'kmaq school board representatives ensure that the needs and best interests of First Nations' students are being addressed in the province's educational system.

The appointment of a Mi'kmaq school board representative is legislated by the provincial Education Act. The minister appoints a representative following consultation with the appropriate First Nations communities.
