Nearly 100 Nova Scotia Youth Benefit From Energy Scholarships
NOTE: A list of this year's scholarship winners and their hometowns follows this release.
Eighteen more Nova Scotia young people have gotten a boost to their education and career goals through the Pengrowth-Nova Scotia Energy Scholarships.
Twelve university students have been awarded $10,000 each over four years and six Nova Scotia Community College students have each received $2,500 non-renewable scholarships offered by the province, in partnership with Pengrowth.
"Keeping communities strong is a goal both Nova Scotia and Pengrowth share," said Energy Minister Bill Estabrooks. "By supporting the advancement of the energy sector's young leaders, we secure employment for Nova Scotians."
Since the program's inception in 2005, almost 100 students have received scholarships and grants. Three million dollars has been invested in program with the province contributing $1 million and Pengrowth $2 million.
"I'm proud to help the Nova Scotia government cultivate the talent that will foster future energy developments," said Jim Kinnear, director and founder of Pengrowth. "This scholarship continues to build expertise within the province of Nova Scotia and supports ongoing technical research related to petroleum projects from an economic and financial perspective."
Scholarships are awarded to Nova Scotia high school graduates pursuing energy-related studies at a university or the Nova Scotia Community College. Recipients are chosen based on a combination of academic achievement and involvement in extra-curricular activities. Winners show potential and have demonstrated a clear interest in the Nova Scotia energy sector.
