HEALTH PROMOTION/PROTECTION–-Preparing for Extreme Events

Hurricanes, blizzards, disasters and pandemics, those are a few of the extreme events Nova Scotia has dealt with over the years.

That is why a cross section of Nova Scotia's emergency management community will take part in the Disaster and Extreme Event Preparedness (DEEP) Conference on Oct. 6, 7 and 8, at the Sea King Club in Shearwater.

More than 200 participants from hospital vice-presidents to mental health practitioners, and first responders will take part each day in training opportunities led by internationally respected speakers.

"Nova Scotia has experienced first-hand its share of emergencies, from Swiss Air to Hurricane Juan and White Juan," said deputy minister of Health, Kevin McNamara. "When we respond to emergencies, we recognize and address the psychosocial component that arises during and after a disaster."

The conference, which took two years to organize will have a focus on the psychosocial needs in disaster and extreme event situations. This response is essential to ensuring that all involved, from those directly impacted to those providing services, receive the supports that they require to cope effectively.

"We have keynote speakers with invaluable experience in these areas," said Mr. MacNamara. "This three day event will enhance our province's ability to respond to the anticipated second wave of the H1N1 influenza pandemic and any future disaster or emergency events."

Over the three days, participants will have the opportunity to take part in presentations and workshops.

Moderated by James Shultz, director for the Center for Disaster and Extreme Event Preparedness, keynote speakers include:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 6, Dr. Maurice Ramirez, president of High Alert, Kissimmee, Florida, will present on how hospitals must plan for the high number of patients during disasters, outbreaks, pandemics and other mass casualty events.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 7, Brian Flynn, retired assistant U.S. surgeon general, will present on disaster and extreme event preparation for disaster and emergency workers during and after disasters.

  • Thursday, Oct. 8, Andrea Allen, assistant dean, College of Adult Continuing Education, Barry University, Miami, will present on safety actions for disaster responders to provide maximum safety and effective action in extreme situations.

The Disaster and Extreme Event Preparedness Center conducts training, research, and service in the areas of disaster behavioural health, special populations preparedness, and disaster epidemiology.
