Province Confirms $10 Million, Welcomes Federal Commitment to Lunenburg Centre

The province confirmed today, Oct. 2, a $10 million commitment to the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre, and welcomed an additional $10.35 million contribution from the federal government.

The new, $31.5 million facility will help Lunenburg County residents enjoy the benefits of recreation and physical activity in their community.

The Department of Health Promotion and Protection had announced a $10 million contribution from its Building Facilities and Infrastructure Together (BFIT) program in May 2008.

"We are pleased to contribute to this important facility for families along the South Shore," said MLA Gary Ramey, on behalf of Maureen MacDonald, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection. "We are also pleased that the federal government has made a similar financial commitment."

MP Gerald Keddy also announced an additional $10.35 million from the Build Canada fund.

The Town of Bridgewater and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, together with community fundraising, will provide the remaining $10.5 million for the project.

The new facility, to be located on York Street in Bridgewater, will feature twin NHL-sized skating rinks with seating for 1,800, a six-lane, 25-metre pool, walking track, community meeting and active living space, and a public library.

The Building Facilities and Infrastructure Together program has committed $62 million to over 30 projects across Nova Scotia, creating $185 million worth of construction in the province over the next eight years.
