Premier to Discuss the Environment and Economy at Regional Conference

Issues that will help the government build a closer working relationship with the eastern provinces and New England states, such as the regional economy and climate change, will be explored at the 33rd Annual Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers.

"Nova Scotians recognize that the world is changing, and that we need to make economic decisions that respect our environment, our people, and our quality of life," said Premier Dexter today, Sept. 11. "We look forward to sharing our experiences and exchanging ideas with our eastern counterparts."

The New England governors and Eastern Canadian premiers are meeting Sept. 14-16 in Saint John, N.B.

New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham and Governor John Baldacci will co-chair this year's Conference titled Greater Cooperation – Stronger Economies. Topics to be discussed include economic opportunities for regional co-operation, regional response to climate change, regional approach to using energy more efficiently and demand-side energy management, and pandemic preparedness.

"These discussion topics are appealing to Nova Scotia because they resonate with what is important to the people of our province," said Premier Dexter. "It is particularly important that we recognize the economic growth potential of the green economy. Strong regional collaboration and partnerships will be essential for Nova Scotia to achieve our objectives in this area."

The premier also said the meeting provides the opportunity to share ideas on developing cost-effective low carbon energy resources within our region.

The Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers was established in 1973 in recognition of the special regional interests that exist among the six New England states and the five Eastern Canadian provinces.
