Lifeguard Supervision Ends This Weekend

Sunday, Aug. 30 will be the last day of beach supervision for most of the 21 beaches staffed by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service.

Lawrencetown Beach, Lake Milo and Aylesford Lake Beach will remain supervised until Monday, Sept. 7. Lawrencetown will re-open the weekend of Sept. 12 and 13 only.

Lifeguards have been supervising the beaches from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily since July 1. Since the service began 37 years ago, there has not been a drowning during supervised hours and, to date, this summer has been no exception.

"I'm proud to report that, so far, we have kept our record intact for another year," said lifeguard service director Paul D'Eon. "Our lifeguards have conducted numerous interventions, and we had a very low rate of major incidents."

Lifeguards will display their skills today, Aug. 28 to Sunday, Aug. 30 at Martinique and Rainbow Haven beaches. Nova Scotia lifeguards will compete against elite athletes from across Canada in the 16-19 age group, open and master categories.

This is the sixth year that Nova Scotia has hosted the Canadian championships.
