Athletes Gear-up for Week Two of Canada Games
After an exciting first week of competition at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Team Nova Scotia's week two athletes have arrived in Charlottetown, ready to compete against some of the country's best athletes.
"Team Nova Scotia had an extremely successful first week of the games," said Ron O'Flaherty, Team Nova Scotia Chef de Mission. "The athletes earned seven medals and gained an experience of a lifetime. Now we're looking forward to continuing our success during the second week."
The medal count for Nova Scotia stands at two gold, four silver and one bronze. Jono Reid and Teddy Skiffington won gold in men's sailing, double-handed 29er. Riley Otto won gold in men's wrestling, up to 85 kilograms. Team Nova Scotia sailors won three silver medals: Tom Brosky for men's single-handed laser; Erin Rafuse for women's single-handed laser; and Dana Archibald and Karen Dexter for women's double-handed 29er. The men's basketball team also won silver. Geoff O'Toole won bronze in the cycling road race event, which was the first medal ever awarded to Team Nova Scotia in cycling at the Canada Games.
During the second week of the games, athletes will compete in athletics, men's baseball, canoe, kayak, golf, men's soccer, swimming, volleyball and women's wrestling.
At the 2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina, the canoe and kayak team won 28 medals, the athletics team won eight medals and the swimming team won five medals.
