National Hockey League star Sidney Crosby, of Cole Harbour, was presented with his Order of Nova Scotia for 2008 today, Aug. 18.
Premier Darrell Dexter and Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis made the presentation at a small ceremony at Province House.
Mr. Crosby is the youngest person to receive the Order of Nova Scotia and is the first person to receive it in the youth category, introduced in 2006.
"Sidney is a true inspiration for Nova Scotians, especially for our young people," said Premier Dexter. "I congratulate him for receiving the Order of Nova Scotia, and wish him all the best as he moves forward with his remarkable career."
Mr. Crosby was unavailable for the investiture ceremony that was held Oct. 8, 2008 because of his schedule with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL. He was one of six recipients in 2008 selected by the Order of Nova Scotia Advisory Council from 68 nominations from across the province.
Mr. Crosby had an exceptional year, winning the Stanley Cup and leading the NHL playoffs with 15 goals. He was the first pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, and was one of the most highly regarded draft picks of all time. By his second season, he became the youngest player, and only teenager, to win a scoring title in a major North American sports league. He became the youngest team captain in NHL history with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007. Mr. Crosby has been a positive role model to countless young people throughout Nova Scotia and North America.
The Order of Nova Scotia was established in 2001. Recipients have the right to use the initials O.N.S. after their names.
