Swine Influenza Update, April 28
As of today, April 28, no new confirmed cases of swine influenza have been reported. To date, four cases have been confirmed in Windsor, Hants Co.
Cases in Nova Scotia have been mild, and we are not seeing severe cases like those being experienced in Mexico. We expect to see more cases. As with regular influenza, once those numbers increase, it is normal to see more severe cases and even deaths.
In collaboration with local infectious disease and infection control experts, new materials are being developed for public health and clinical management of potential swine influenza cases. This information is being distributed across the health care system today.
The Department of Health Promotion and Protection will continue its surveillance efforts across the province using established public health practices and protocols. Any additional cases which arise will also be thoroughly investigated.
Anyone planning to travel to Mexico who has not had a flu shot, is advised to get a flu shot. Anyone who has recently been to Mexico, and has flu-like symptoms, should contact a doctor or a walk-in clinic and mention their recent travel history. Prevention continues to be the best approach to avoid illness. Nova Scotians are advised to wash their hands thoroughly and often, cough into their sleeves and stay away from the public if they are sick.
