Province Contributes to New Valley Recreation Centre

Health Promotion and Protection (March 2006 - Jan. 2011)

Annapolis Valley residents will have more opportunities to live healthy, active lives, thanks to the province's additional $2 million investment in the Kings Mutual Century Centre in Berwick.

Premier Rodney MacDonald announced the funding for the multi-sport centre today, April 25, at a sod-turning at the future site of the facility.

"This will bring a modern, energy-efficient recreational facility to one of the fastest-growing areas in Nova Scotia," said Premier MacDonald. "There is no doubt the Kings Mutual Century Centre will be the hub of community activity for many years to come."

The Department of Health Promotion and Protection contributed $2 million to the project in 2007. Today's announcement brings the total investment from the province to $4 million. The estimated total cost of the facility is $17 million.

The facility will be built in stages as funds become available. The first phase will include a 900-seat arena, a 200-metre walking track, a banquet room and the Berwick and District Lions Den. When complete, it will also include a four-sheet curling rink, fitness centre, outdoor swimming and leisure pool, community library and meeting space.

The province's latest investment comes from the Building Facilities and Infrastructure Together (B-FIT) program. Through B-FIT, the province has committed more than $55 million to 31 major infrastructure projects, generating $165 million in construction.

The announcement is part of Nova Scotia's Building for Growth infrastructure strategy. The program will stimulate the economy by creating a demand for goods and services and creating jobs. The Nova Scotia government is committed to improving the economy and investing for the future.
