Winding River School in Stewiacke Officially Opens
Nearly 270 students in Stewiacke, Colchester Co., are enjoying their modern and healthy learning environment at the new Winding River Consolidated Elementary School.
Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Brooke Taylor joined students, parents, teachers, staff, school board and government officials today, April 6, for the school's official opening ceremony.
"Government is committed to educating Nova Scotians for good jobs and improving the province's infrastructure," said Mr. Taylor, who attended on behalf of Education Minister Judy Streatch. "Winding River Consolidated is a wonderful new school that supports the needs of the community, but it will also be a draw for young families thinking about moving to the Stewiacke area for years to come."
The $9-million school for students in Primary to Grade 6 replaces two aging schools.
"The opening of this school marks the beginning of a new era for elementary students in Stewiacke and surrounding communities," said Trudy Thompson, chair of the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board. "The benefits to our students of this state-of-the-art school are tremendous."
Avondale Construction Ltd. was awarded the construction contract and the architectural firm of Fowler, Bauld and Mitchell designed the school. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal oversaw the school's construction.
It was built through the province's multi-year, $425-million capital construction program.
